Articles of Confederation 1/23/12

1. What was it? Founders set forth their ideas in a document known as the Articles of Confederation. A confederation is a form of political organization in which sovereign states delegate power to a central government for specified purposes.

2. Why was it created? To keep the thirteen states at peace.

3. What were it's main features? Gave rights to people in the states, and set taxes.

4. Why did it have these features? So everyone can be at peace, with no confrontation.

5. Identify/Explain weaknesses of articles as a plan of government.
  • Congress had no power to tax.
  • Congress could make agreements with foreign nations, but it had no power to force state governments to honor these agreements.
  • Congress had no power to make laws regulating trade among the states.
  • Congress had no power to make laws directly regulating the behavior of citizens.
